Harrison Sheppard is a nationally known lawyer, author, and public speaker. He received a classical education and his B.A. from St John’s College, Annapolis, MD (1961) and his Juris Doctor from Hastings College of Law, University of California, San Francisco (1967). Mr. Sheppard, a Member of the California State Bar, is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a Master member of the Edward J. McFetridge American Inn of Court, San Francisco, and is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. Drawing on over 30 years experience as a lawyer in the U.S. government and in both group and solo private practice, Mr. Sheppard’s work demonstrates the successes of a peacemaking model of legal practice, and the failures and unnecessary costs of the typical adversarial model.

Mr. Sheppard is principal of Harrison Sheppard Law & Public Relations (since 1993) General Counsel to Jock McDonald Film, Inc.; and founder of an international artists’ agency (see Art Gallery). He is a recognized national leader of efforts to reduce litigation in the U.S. and move legal education toward a peacemaking model in order to provide efficient legal services to more people who need them and preserve and protect our republican institutions and democratic civil liberties.

In addition to his talks given to audiences around the country (including continuing legal education programs for lawyers), Harrison Sheppard’s legal essays and Opinion Editorials have been widely published. His writings explain how law schools cost the American economy billions of dollars annually in unnecessary litigation by preparing students to fail as problem-solvers through exclusive study of litigated cases. He advocates a major shift in legal education toward teaching the practical skills needed to help law students become effective counselors, negotiators, conciliators, and peacemakers — and litigators only as a last resort.
